Alcoholic Watermelon "Pirate Ship"

topcook.tomathouse.com

Ingredients:

  • 1 seedless watermelon weighing 8-9 kg.
  • 1 bottle (450 ml) of dark rum
  • 1 mango, peeled and cut into pieces
  • 1 pineapple, peeled and cut into pieces
  • 1 papaya, peeled (set aside 2 long slices, cut the remaining flesh into pieces)
  • Special equipment: tray, watermelon spoon, apple corer, 30cm wooden skewer, 20cm wooden skewers and toothpicks

Preparation:

  1. Place the watermelon on its side (ends facing left and right) and cut off a small flat piece of rind to help the watermelon stand upright.
  2. Using the screw-on cap of a rum bottle, mark a circle at the top of the watermelon. Cut out the circle to create a hole exposing the flesh. Tilt the watermelon on its side and press the bottle into the watermelon to insert the neck. Turn the watermelon over so the bottle is upside down.
  3. Place the watermelon on a tray and refrigerate until all the rum has been absorbed into the flesh, 12 to 24 hours, depending on the density of the watermelon.
  4. Make a ship:

Cut the top half of the watermelon lengthwise into one piece, just above the stem. Using a watermelon scoop, scoop out as many melon balls as possible from the top and bottom halves of the melon and place them in a large bowl. Use a spoon to scrape out any remaining flesh from the top and bottom rinds. The bottom half will be your boat.
  5. Using a small knife, cut a 2.5 cm deep and 7 cm wide recess on each side of the ship. Mark four evenly spaced portholes under each recess using an apple corer (do not press all the way through). Use a small knife to cut out the marked circles.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the mango, pineapple, and papaya chunks (reserving the slices) with the watermelon balls and fill the boat with the fruit. Add the remaining fruit as needed.
  7. Sail:

Cut the top half of the watermelon in half lengthwise and slice into pieces to make sails. From the center of the most curved sections of the rind, cut two 7.5 cm square sails. Cut two 5 cm sails and one 4 cm sail. Trim the back of the sail to make them neat.
  8. Thread 3 sails onto a 30 cm long wooden skewer in the following order: the large sail will be on the bottom, the medium sail in the middle, and the small sail on top. Thread the remaining 2 sails onto a 20 cm long wooden skewer, with the large sail on the bottom.
  9. Insert the skewers with the sails into the fruit so that the mast with three sails is at the back.
  10. Using a small knife, cut out four small flags from papaya slices. Attach one to the top of each mast with sails. Insert two toothpicks into the back of the ship and attach the flags to them.
