Ingredients:
- 400 g lean ground turkey (7% fat)
- 170 g lean ground beef tenderloin
- 1 clove of garlic
- 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar + 1 tsp
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp hot sauce
- 2 tbsp. l. olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 4 whole grain buns or pitas, toasted
- Lettuce leaves
- Tomatoes
- Mustard
- Ketchup
Preparation:
- Preheat oven to 190°C.
- Crush the garlic cloves, sprinkle with salt, and mash with the flat side of a large knife until a coarse paste forms. Combine the garlic in a small bowl with the balsamic vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.
- Crumble the ground turkey and beef into a large bowl. Pour the garlic mixture over the meat and form into 4 140g (5 oz) patties. Cover and set aside while you prepare the onions.
- Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned but not mushy, about 15 minutes. Drizzle the onion with the remaining 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat for 1 minute. Brush the patties with olive oil on one side and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Cook, seasoned side down, until browned, about 2 minutes. Brush the other side of the patties with oil, season with salt and pepper, flip, and cook until browned on the other side, about 2 minutes more.
- Transfer the patties to a baking dish and bake until a meat thermometer inserted into the side of the patty registers 160°F (71°C), about 5 minutes. Place the patties on buns or in a pita and let rest for a few minutes. Serve with caramelized onions and any toppings you desire.
